The workshops are held in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The workshops are designed to allow you time to explore Santa Fe, the second largest art market in the United States; and the only city in the United States to be declared a Creative City by UNESCO. Workshops are limited to 5 people to provide significant one-on-one time and individual attention. The small class size encourages interaction and creative problem solving with other participants.
Since the workshops are created based on your interest, they can be modified to accommodate your specific questions and needs. Please contact us for specific times and dates, and tuition costs.
The Workshops:
In this workshop you will identify the elements of a legal portfolio and how it adds value to your work. Together, we will assess your business needs to identify and prioritize which agreements are critical for you. Selecting not more than two key agreements, you will analyze the elements of the agreement and with support, prepare the agreement. At the end of the workshop, you will be ready to explain the terms, and use your agreements.
Participants will gather the tools to build a tailored system of legal documents customized for their art business to use everyday as they create, sell, and publicize their art.
This workshop is 15 hours, and is presented over five days, with each class meeting 3 hours daily.
In this workshop you will identify the elements of a legal portfolio and how it adds value to your work. We will review and compare are variety of different agreements and become familiar with basic elements of the agreements. This special class will help you to understand agreements generally and become comfortable with legal language. Together, we will assess your business needs to identify and prioritize which agreements are critical for you. Identifying not more than 4 key agreements, we will work together to prepare each agreement. At the end of the workshop, you will be ready to explain the terms, and use your agreements.

This workshop is 25 hours, and is presented over five days, with each class meeting 5 hours daily. This can be spread over 2 weeks, with 2 hour class times. This is a very intensive workshop.
Most artists and designers are familiar with copyrights. But, are you aware that a copyright is really a bundle of rights? Copyright is simple, and at the same time fabulously complicated.
This workshop will help you identify your copyright goals, and design a strategy for your copyrights. Many times, this strategic assessment of your copyright portfolio is critical to develop a cost-effective copyright registration plan that prepares you to license your work in order to reach new markets. This workshop will help you understand the balance between rights and contracts in using and protecting your work. This workshop will also help you understand when you run the risk of violating another’s copyrights and how to avoid it.
This workshop is 10 hours, and is presented over five days, with each class meeting 2 hours daily.
Have you ever wanted to safeguard your work, but didn’t know where to begin? This workshop explains trademarks and service-marks. You will understand how they fit within your artistic identity and signature, and business marketing plans. We will review the trademark application process so you understand when to get assistance, and how to evaluate different trademark services. You will learn what are the elements of a strong trademark. You will consider creative strategies to using marks in all aspects of your work. Importantly, this class will help you define a strategy to see whether or not trademarks are important part of your creative business plan.
This workshop is 10 hours, and is presented over five days, with each class meeting 2 hours daily.
This workshop is designed to assist you understand and develop licensing strategies. This workshop is geared for both companies looking to license work as well as artists seeking to license their work. We will explore different markets and opportunities for licensing, as well as understanding the structure of a licensing arrangement. Different licensing agreements will be presented and analyzed.
This workshop is 10 hours, and is presented over five days, with each class meeting 2 hours daily. Guest experts will provide practical suggestions and insights.
Do you believe that contracts are “take it or leave it”? Are you afraid to ask for changes in an agreement because you fear the entire deal will fall through? What do you do when they say, “You have to sign this today, or we’ll miss an important deadline”? How should you respond if someone says “if you want a written agreement that means you don’t trust me”?
These are very common concerns that hold back many people from getting a fair agreement. Agreeing to terms that you are not comfortable with, or feeling that you gave away too much can undermine the strength of the business relationship and undermine your confidence, not to mention your profit margin.
This workshop will teach you to enjoy negotiating agreements! You will learn how to ask for changes, and how to evaluate the risks and benefits of proposed changes and alternatives. You will learn the value of negotiations to understand another’s other business method, and to communicate your expectations about the arrangement. Just think, if you don’t feel comfortable requesting a change in a provision now, how are you going to feel about dealing with more difficult issues such as payment later on? Importantly, this workshop will show you how, through negotiating, you establish a basis for future communication and problem solving.
This workshop is designed for 10 people. There is significant group interaction and role-play. The workshop will teach you basic negotiation skills, and then you will apply and refine the skills throughout the workshop by negotiating prepared scenarios and observing others negotiate. Importantly, this workshop will help you develop your skills within your personal communication style so it fits and feels natural for you. Even if you are a conflict-avoider, this workshop will help you!
